2. Alaya-Vijnana

Gallery opening performance, March 30, 2023 ( https://centerforthehumanities.org/exploring-the-liminal-space-of-inter-rituals-by-three-chinese-female-artists/)

Ālaya-Vijñāna is a performance created for a gallery opening, where I acted as a medium bridging the human and the transcendent. The movements are ritualistic and inspired from Butoh. The name of this performance, Ālaya-vijñāna (आलयविज्ञान), often translated as the "storehouse consciousness",  is a concept in Buddhist philosophy. It means karmic seeds and latent tendencies that shape all conscious experiences. Our past or innate experiences and concepts shape how we see the world and use our senses, and rituals, is a way to internalize a system of belief and store it into the “storehouse consciousness”, which later could be manifested into more perceptions and experiences related to the belief system behind the ritual. Thus, to transcend the space and audiences into a world beyond, I choose ritualistic movements and intensive gaze to plant seeds and alter subconscious awareness.
